Day 1: Mekele – Hamede Ela
Drive to Hamed Ela via Berhale. The Danakil Depression begins here, one of the most inhospitable yet spectacular regions in the world. Visit sulphur springs and towns like Berhale, where camel caravans stop before heading to the northern highlands. Drive 3–4 hours. Camp at Hamed Ela. Sunset at Dallol. Overnight camping at Hamed Ela.

Day 2: Ragad (Asebo) & Dallol
Observe local salt mining — cutting rectangular pieces and loading them on camels. Drive to Dallol and Lake Assal, see volcanic landscapes, follow camel caravans, and interact with Afar people. Return to Hamed Ela, then proceed to Mekele.

Option 2 – Day 1: Mekele to Dodom via Abaala
Early drive to Dodom (base of Erta Ale). Rough 80 km road, approx. 6 hours. Pass small hamlets, arrive Dodom, then trek ~3 hours to Erta Ale. Camels transport camping materials. Overnight at the Erta Ale rim, watching the lava lake.

Option 2 – Day 2: Descend from Erta Ale
Early morning descent from Erta Ale to Dodom. Drive to Eript and Erbiti, then proceed back to Mekele.


3 Days Danakil Depression

Day 1: Mekele to Erta Ale
Drive early to Dodom, then trek ~3 hours to Erta Ale. Dinner around 17:00, then trek to the Erta Ale rim by 20:00. Overnight on top of the volcano.

Day 2: Early morning at Erta Ale
Explore pit craters at sunrise. After breakfast, drive to Lake Giulietti (Afrera) and the salt flats; interact with Afar people. Continue to Erbiti and proceed to Abaala / Hamed Ela.

Day 3: Danakil to Mekele
Visit Ragad salt mining, the Dallol landscapes, Lake Assal, and nearby camel caravans. Walk with Afar people, then drive back to Hamed Ela and onwards to Mekele. End of tour.


4 Days Danakil Depression

Day 1: Mekele – Hamede Ela
Drive via Berhale. Visit sulphur springs, Berhale town, and camel caravan stop points. 3–4 hours driving. Camp at Hamed Ela.

Day 2: Hamede Ela – Dodom
Drive early to Dodom at the base of Erta Ale. Rough 80 km road, approx. 6 hours. Trek ~3 hours to Erta Ale; camels carry camping gear. Overnight at Erta Ale rim.

Day 3: Early morning at Erta Ale
Walk around pits and craters at sunrise. Return to Dodom for breakfast, then drive to Hamed Ela village. Overnight camping at Hamed Ela.

Day 4: Ragad (Asebo) & Dallol
Visit salt mines to observe cutting and loading of salt on camels. Drive to Dallol and Lake Assal to view volcanic landscapes and camel caravans. Return to Hamed Ela, then proceed to Mekele. End of tour.
